This summer, I had the chance to intern at Scottmoore Architectural Firm, and it was an experience filled with learning and growth. I got to be part of site visits, meetings, and work on different projects, all of which taught me so much about architecture.
One of the most memorable parts of my internship was visiting an architecture school for kids called “Water Block Kids.” We were invited to talk to the kids about what architecture is and why it matters. It was a bit of a challenge because we had to take big architectural ideas and make them simple and fun for young kids to understand. We wanted them to see that architecture isn’t just about building things—it’s about thinking of how those buildings fit into the community. To make it interesting, we did activities like drawing and building models with them. They created their own parks, adding whatever they wanted. It was funny because some of them forgot to add important things like bathrooms! It was really nice to see how excited and curious they were about learning something new.
At the firm, I also got to work on a big project called “10 Keys.” This project was all about designing townhouses for a lot in New Orleans East. It came with a lot of opportunities but also some tough challenges. Being part of “10 Keys” gave me hands-on experience in different parts of the design process, from brainstorming ideas to making them happen. We even got to see renderings of how the townhomes would look both inside and out. We attended a lot of meetings to keep the project moving forward, and there were many revisions to make sure everything was just right. It taught me how important it is to pay attention to all the little details.
Overall, my internship at Scottmoore was a great experience, and I’ve learned so much that I’ll carry with me in the future.
